Sustainable agriculture in Burundi.

WHAT WE DO

Development through sustainable production and trade

ORGANIC CERTIFICATION IN BURUNDI

Ecodiverse has in 2023 in collaboration with the local Burundian cooperative Bu-Bio, converted and certified the first 14 farms to climate-smart organic certified agriculture according to The European Union (EU) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards. The purpose is to create consumer confidence in the export market through an internationally recognized quality control and contribute to the international green transition and create an economic catalyst for one of the world's poorest countries through fair and green trade.

TRAINING AND CAPACITY BUILDING

Ecodiverse helps local farmers in Burundi with education and the training needed to achieve organic certification. We also buy the crops they don't need themselves. In this way, the local farmer can provide for their own household and generate additional income, thereby improving their quality of life.

The Burundian cooperative Bu-Bio, has been a key factor in helping us reach all corners of the country and thereby given us the opportunity to introduce the organic principles in 5 provinces.

WHY IS ORGANIC FARMING IMPORTANT FOR BURUNDI?

The road to "Climate Smart" organic and regenerative agriculture in Burundi is not a long one.

With an increased demand for certified organic products on the international market, as well as the positive effect organic farming has on biodiversity for everyone on the planet. It is possible to create a market-driven sustainable production of organic products and at the same time contribute to economic growth and social development.

EMPOWERMENT - WOMEN AND YOUTH

Education and training for women and youth.

The opportunity to build a self-sufficient life trough work and training in organic agriculture, by the Ecodiverse Organic Training Program  (EOTP).

After finalizing the EOTP, a startpackage of organic seedlings will be supplied to those who have completed the course.

THE ORGANIC DREAM

Ignace von der Recke Kamatari, son of Prince Pascal Kamatari of Burundi and Mimi von der Recke from Denmark, has long been waiting for the opportunity to convert the family farm in Burundi into an organic certified farm and inspire others to follow suit.

A dream that, until recently, had been put on hold due to Burundi's many years of political unrest.

HOW WE WORK

Ongoing projects

After almost 2 years of patience and our beautiful avocado plants are starting to give fruit.....

Plant Nursery

09/08/2024

Our nursery at the FOTA farm is currently mainly focused on producing Organic Certified Hass avocado, Passionfruit, Tree Tomato and chili plants.

A healthy soil is an amazingly complex ecosystem made up of countless billions of microscopic organisms, all working in their own little niches, feeding off each other and sugars secreted from the roots of growing plants. The whole system is ultimately fed by growing plants, while at the same time the system helps the plants grow.
