Farming like in the old days

Mixed production is a type of farming where you combine the cultivation of trees and shrubs with rotational crops or animal husbandry on the same area. It is also called agroforestry.

Mixed production can be, for example, an orchard where chickens roam between the trees. Or it can be the cultivation of fruit trees in combination with strips of vegetables or cereals on the same field. It could also be coppicing combined with outdoor pigs that get shelter and shade from the trees.

Mixed farming

At FOTA FARM in Burundi, we have a small herd of cattle, pigs, rabbits and sheep, all living a good life under organic principles.

Our cattle are out all day with our shepherd, finding the best grazing areas on the farm's 85 hectares, before returning to their spacious stables in the afternoon.
